Natural Disasters can affect us all and this task shows students the effects of Disasters. It shows how these disasters can impact the environment and people around us, making this an authentic task that the students can relate to.
This teaching plan allows students to explore and research how and why a Natural Disaster occurs. Working in groups, students are allocated a Natural Disaster and will then make a virtual poster using Glogster. This virtual poster will then be presented in class as a group project, with each student taking a turn to explain the different areas of the poster and facts about their specific Disaster.
This is a breakdown of the suggested lesson plans for the project.
* Student blogs are to be completed during silent reading, ensuring groups have the maximum time to research and complete their presentation *
Lesson 1:
Students brainstorm individually about Natural Disasters.
Students then write what they think a Natural Disaster might be on the electronic whiteboard.
Choose or allocate groups (4-5 students per group).
Divide topics between groups - draw topics out of a hat for fun!
Brief research about topic- students to research on classroom laptops via the internet.
Lesson 2:
Students get together in same groups.
Teacher is to go through website together to give students an understanding of what is required to complete their project and make a virtual poster.
Inform students of helpful links to aid and continue their research.
Have students use the electronic whiteboard themselves to access different pages and links on this website to show the ease of use to other students.
Students start group research on laptops.
Lesson 3:
Teacher is to show tutorial video of Glogster to show how to make a virtual poster (also see Teacher Resources on Teacher's Page for more information on Glogster).
Make sure that each student is interacting with the technology to grasp the concepts-questioning students to ensure they know what they are doing, etc.
Students start to put the bones of the virtual poster together.
Lesson 4:
Students are to finish researching topic, gathering all required information, images and/or video.
Teacher is to show the students where they are to save their virtual poster so it is easy to access.
Lesson 5:
Students are to put facts, images, videos etc. together into the virtual poster.
Lesson 6:
Students finalise virtual poster to be shown in class. Allow enough time for students to tweak their final product.
Presentation:
A class presentation will take place after the 6 lessons. Once completed there will be a display of the presentations where the groups will be allocated to different classes where they will present their Virtual Posters.
